Endoscopy is an integral part of a gastroenterology practice. It allows direct visualization and treatment of the gastrointestinal tract without open surgery. Some common examples of the utilization of endoscopy include: resection of pre-cancerous polyps from the colon; removal of gallstones from the common bile duct; dilation of an area narrowing in the esophagus (food pipe), which interferes with swallowing food; and placement of a feeding tube directly into the stomach through the skin, allowing for nutrition when someone is unable to swallow.
